Curcumin is one of the most popular natural ingredients in food supplements. It is well known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, there is one important problem: low bioavalability of curcumin supplemnets, which means that our bodies have difficulty absorbing and using it. So, how can we make the most of curcumin supplements?

1. The health benefits of curcumin

Curcumin is a natural compound found in turmeric (Curcuma longa), the golden-yellow spice widely used in Asian cooking and traditional medicine.

For centuries, turmeric has been valued for its traditional health uses. Today, scientists are studying curcumin to understand how it may support different functions in the body.

Its most interesting properties are related to inflammation and oxidative stress.

Supporting a healthy inflammatory response

Inflammation is a natural process that helps the body protect itself and recover from injury. However, when inflammation continues for a long time, it can contribute to various health problems.

Curcumin has been studied for its ability to influence substances involved in the body’s inflammatory response. This makes it an interesting ingredient for people looking to support their general health.

Supporting joint comfort and mobility

Joint health is one of the most researched uses of curcumin supplements.

Some clinical studies suggest that curcumin may help reduce joint discomfort and stiffness, particularly in people with knee osteoarthritis. .

Providing antioxidant support

Every day, our cells are exposed to unstable molecules called free radicals. When these molecules accumulate, they can contribute to a process known as oxidative stress.

Curcumin has antioxidant properties and may help the body manage oxidative stress by influencing its natural antioxidant systems.

Other areas of scientific interest

Researchers are also investigating curcumin for its possible effects on metabolic health, cardiovascular health and brain function.

2. The main problem: Curcumin has very low bioavailability

Despite its well-documented biological activity, curcumin has one major limitation: its naturally low bioavailability.

Numerous laboratory studies have demonstrated curcumin’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, achieving sufficient concentrations of curcumin in the bloodstream and tissues remains a challenge, particularly when using conventional curcumin extracts.

This is mainly due to three factors:

Poor water solubility

Curcumin is a lipophilic compound, meaning it dissolves more readily in fats than in water. Its very low solubility in gastrointestinal fluids limits its dissolution and subsequent absorption in the digestive tract.

Rapid metabolism

Following absorption, curcumin undergoes extensive metabolism, primarily in the intestinal wall and liver. It is rapidly converted into metabolites, particularly glucuronide and sulfate conjugates. As a result, only a small proportion of the absorbed curcumin remains in its original, unconjugated form, commonly referred to as free curcumin.

This distinction is important because free curcumin and its metabolites may differ in biological activity, although their respective contributions to curcumin’s health effects are not yet fully understood.

Rapid elimination

Curcumin and its metabolites are also relatively quickly eliminated from the body, further limiting their circulating concentrations and duration of exposure.

For this reason, improving curcumin supplements bioavailability has become one of the main areas of innovation recently.

3. How can curcumin bioavailability be improved?

The good news is that supplement manufacturers have developed several technologies to help the body absorb curcumin more effectively.

Combining curcumin with black pepper (piperine)

Piperine is a natural substance found in black pepper. It has been used in supplements to increase curcumin exposure, partly by affecting how the body processes certain compounds.

However, newer studies have questioned how reliably piperine improves levels of free curcumin. Piperine can also interact with some medicines.

Phospholipid and liposomal technologies

Curcumin can be combined with fat-like substances called phospholipids. These technologies, including phytosomes and liposomes, aim to improve the way curcumin mixes with digestive fluids and passes through the intestinal wall.

Certain formulations have demonstrated better absorption than standard curcumin.

Phospholipid and liposomal technologies

Micelles are very small structures that help poorly water-soluble ingredients mix with liquids. Some curcumin products use micellar systems, nanoparticles or other specialised delivery technologies.

Human studies have shown that certain micellar products can significantly increase curcumin absorption.

Combining curcumin with natural plant fibres

Another innovative solution uses galactomannans, a type of natural dietary fibre found in fenugreek seeds.

When combined with curcuminoids in a special formulation, these fibres can help improve absorption and increase the amount of free curcuminoids measured in the bloodstream.

This is the technology used in Life Extension’s Curcumin Elite™.

4. Why is Life Extension Curcumin Elite™ different?

Curcumin Elite™ from Life Extension takes a different approach to solving curcumin’s absorption problem.

Rather than simply increasing the amount of curcumin in each capsule, the formula combines turmeric compounds with specialised fenugreek fibres to improve their bioavailability.

Life Extension uses a formulation called CGM (curcumin-galactomannan), which combines curcuminoids with galactomannans obtained from fenugreek seeds.

This combination is designed to improve the delivery of curcuminoids and increase the amount that remains in the free, unconjugated form after absorption.

This technology has been was examined in a clinical study.

Researchers found that the curcumin–fenugreek formulation produced more than 45.5 times higher bioavailability of free curcuminoids compared with standard curcumin.

They also reported that around 74% of the measured curcuminoids in the blood were in the free form following one of the tested doses.

These results are important because many curcumin products focus on total curcuminoid absorption, which can include both free curcuminoids and their metabolites.

Curcumin is a fascinating natural compound with promising antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. But its poor bioavailability remains one of the biggest challenges in curcumin supplementation.

Modern delivery technologies offer possible solutions, helping the body absorb more curcumin and, in some cases, maintain higher levels of free curcuminoids.

Life Extension’s Curcumin Elite™ is an example of this approach. By combining curcuminoids with specially formulated fenugreek fibres, it uses a delivery technology that has demonstrated significantly higher bioavailability than standard curcumin in human research.

The key message is simple: when choosing a curcumin supplement, do not look only at the number of milligrams on the label. Pay attention to the formulation, its absorption technology and the scientific evidence behind it.

Important information

Curcumin supplements are not a replacement for medical treatment or a balanced diet. People taking medicines, especially blood thinners, or those with liver or gallbladder conditions should consult a healthcare professional before use. Rare cases of liver injury have been associated with turmeric supplements, including some enhanced-bioavailability products.
